In the heart of Kenya’s bustling cities like Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa, a ‘Boda Boda’ isn’t just a Motorbike Taxi, it is a lifeline transporting people. With an estimated 1.5 million boda riders currently serving the Kenyan economy, they are a vital part of the transportation system, connecting people to jobs, schools, and essential services.
Despite working in the most challenging conditions, boda riders often face negative stereotypes, being perceived as reckless or unprofessional, and treated with little dignity and respect.
Calvince Okumu, a former boda rider, was unhappy with this public perception and knew it had to change. He understood the challenges first-hand and how a lack of soft skills, digital know-how and community support left riders struggling. So, he took it upon himself to become a ‘boda boda leader’, organising the workers and uplifting his fellow riders by providing training in financial literacy, digital skills, and customer service. His goal: to change the narrative by educating the riders to promote professionalism.
Calvince’s journey began with ‘Skills4Riders’, an online learning programme for location-based platform workers developed by the GIZ Gig Economy Initiative. The course equips riders with essential skills in financial literacy, digital tools, customer orientation, and road safety. Through GIZ’s partner in Kenya, the Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT), Calvince learned about various tools a boda rider operating through online platforms needs to effectively plan and manage finances, maximize revenue and improve customer service—all while prioritising road safety.
The courses helped me understand what I was missing as a leader. I gained knowledge on gig worker policies, gender perspectives, and the importance of personal hygiene and customer etiquette.
Calvince Okumu, National chair, Digital Boda Drivers and Deliveries Association of Kenya
Building a Community of Professional Riders
Armed with this knowledge, Calvince is now actively educating fellow riders–especially women–on how to navigate the gig economy with professionalism and confidence. Today, he leads two rider associations, working to establish a new industry standard for professionalism and safety. His vision is clear: a future where well-trained riders are respected, earn better income, and contribute to a safer transport sector.
“When we are transformed, we will have a very good community. In the end, we want respect for our profession and the work we do. For that we must offer good service and become more professional.
Calvince Okumu, National chair, Digital Boda Drivers and Deliveries Association of Kenya”
The Gig Economy Initiative Works for Riders
Working in the gig economy presents both opportunities and challenges for many riders. The sector relies heavily on technology, connecting workers with customers through digital platforms. Without proper knowledge and training, riders often struggle with financial instability, safety risks, and a lack of professional recognition. However, training programmes such as ‘Skills4Riders’ are achieving a significant impact beyond individual success, with over 3,000 riders having completed the course bundle to date.
Ensuring that gig workers have access to skills development and fair working conditions remains essential for building a sustainable and inclusive gig economy that values both—workers and the communities they serve.
A Strategic Initiative to Save Lives and Promote Responsible Road Use
By: Digital Boda Drivers & Deliveries Association of Kenya (DBDDAK) Theme: Safety Is Life – Sanity & Safety on Our Roads
Road safety remains one of the most urgent public concerns in Kenya today. As motorcycle transport and delivery services continue to expand rapidly across the country, the need for discipline, safety awareness, and professional conduct on our roads has never been greater.
In recent years, Naivasha and the wider Nakuru County have witnessed a rising number of road accidents involving motorcycles—leading to loss of lives, serious injuries, permanent disabilities, and devastating emotional and financial impact on families. These incidents are preventable, and they demand a united response.
It is with this commitment that the Digital Boda Drivers & Deliveries Association of Kenya (DBDDAK) has launched a Road Safety Sensitization Campaign in Naivasha, bringing together riders, motorists, passengers, pedestrians, safety agencies, and community stakeholders to champion responsible road use.
Why This Campaign Matters
Motorcycles have become a key part of Kenya’s mobility and economic system, enabling convenience, employment, courier services, and emergency support. However, unsafe riding practices such as overspeeding, reckless overtaking, failure to wear protective gear, substance abuse, and poor bike maintenance continue to put lives at risk.
Beyond statistics are real human tragedies—families grieving, children left without parents, communities losing productive members, and hospitals overwhelmed with preventable injuries.
No journey or trip is worth a human life.
Our Road Safety Commitment
DBDDAK is committed to transforming the transport sector through safety-centered leadership, professional discipline, and community partnership. The Naivasha road safety sensitization program focuses on:
Key Objectives
Enforcing compulsory use of helmets and reflector jackets
Promoting regular motorcycle maintenance and safety checks
Advocating against overspeeding and reckless overtaking
Encouraging zero alcohol and drug influence while riding
Strengthening training, public education, and safety compliance
Enhancing collaboration with NTSA, Traffic Police, county institutions, and health facilities
Establishing emergency response and first aid support systems
This is not just a campaign—it is a long-term transformation agenda.
A Message to Riders
Every time you start your motorcycle, remember that someone is waiting for you to return home. You are valuable. You are needed. You are loved.
Ride with responsibility and discipline.
Protect your passengers—they are human beings, not just customers.
Speak up and correct fellow riders respectfully.
Report dangerous behavior for the greater good.
A professional rider is a protector of life.
A Call to the Public
Road safety is a shared responsibility. We urge motorists, pedestrians, business owners, and institutions to support this campaign by promoting safe riding culture, respecting all road users, and standing against reckless and illegal practices.
Together, we can build a safe and orderly transport environment that benefits everyone.
Our Vision for Naivasha
We envision Naivasha becoming a model town known for:
Safe, disciplined, and professional motorcycle operations
Reduced road accidents and increased public confidence
Strong partnerships between riders, authorities, and the community
This is achievable—if we act together.
Conclusion
Road accidents are preventable, not unavoidable. The responsibility belongs to all of us. Let us protect life, preserve families, and build a safer community.
Sanity and Safety.
Safety Begins With Me.
Safety Saves Lives.

Kenya’s urban landscape has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, with the emergence of digital boda services as a prominent mode of transportation. These on-demand motorcycle taxis have revolutionized the way people move around cities, offering convenience, affordability, and accessibility to millions of Kenyans.
The growth of digital boda services can be attributed to several factors:
Technological advancements
The widespread availability of smartphones and internet connectivity has made it easy for both riders and drivers to access digital platforms. Apps like Uber Moto, Bolt, and Glovo have simplified the booking process and provided real-time tracking of rides.
Urbanization
The rapid growth of cities like Nairobi and Mombasa has increased the demand for efficient transportation options. As more people move to urban areas, the need for affordable and convenient transportation becomes more pressing.
Traffic congestion
Digital boda services offer a faster and more efficient way to navigate through congested city streets. Their smaller size and maneuverability allow them to weave through traffic and reach destinations more quickly.
Affordability
Compared to traditional taxis, digital boda services are often more affordable for many Kenyans. This is particularly true for short trips and during peak hours.
The benefits of digital boda services are numerous:
Increased mobility: Digital boda services have improved access to transportation, especially for those living in remote areas or with limited mobility. People can now easily travel to work, school, hospitals, and other destinations without relying on public transportation or private vehicles.
Job creation: The industry has created numerous employment opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs. Digital boda drivers have become a significant source of income for many Kenyans, particularly those from rural areas.
Economic growth: Digital boda services have contributed to the growth of the informal economy and boosted local businesses. Riders often patronize nearby shops, restaurants, and other businesses, stimulating economic activity.
While digital boda services have brought significant benefits to Kenya, there are also challenges to address:
Safety concerns: Accidents involving boda bodas have raised concerns about safety. To mitigate risks, authorities have implemented regulations such as requiring drivers to wear helmets and follow traffic rules.
Regulatory issues: The rapid growth of the digital boda industry has created challenges for regulators in terms of licensing, taxation, and safety standards.
Environmental impacts: The increasing number of motorcycles on the roads can contribute to air pollution and noise pollution. Efforts are being made to promote the use of electric bikes and encourage sustainable practices.
Despite these challenges, digital boda services are poised to play a vital role in Kenya’s urban development. With appropriate regulation, safety measures, and technological advancements, these services can continue to provide affordable, accessible, and efficient transportation to millions of Kenyans.
Ensuring the safety of both riders and drivers is paramount in the digital boda industry. Here are some essential best practices for digital boda drivers to prioritize safety:
Wear protective gear: Helmets, reflective jackets, and gloves are essential for reducing the risk of injuries in case of accidents. Adhering to safety regulations can also protect drivers from fines and penalties.
Follow traffic rules: Strictly adhere to traffic laws and regulations to avoid accidents and fines. This includes obeying speed limits, stopping at red lights, and using turn signals.
Maintain vehicle safety: Regularly check the condition of your motorcycle, including tires, brakes, lights, and engine. Ensure that your vehicle is in good working order to prevent breakdowns and accidents.
Avoid overloading: Carrying excessive weight or passengers can compromise safety and handling. Adhere to weight limits and avoid overloading your motorcycle.
Drive defensively: Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate potential hazards. Be prepared to react quickly to changing traffic conditions and avoid sudden braking or swerving.
Use designated pickup and drop-off points: Avoid stopping in dangerous areas or obstructing traffic. Use designated pickup and drop-off points whenever possible to minimize risks.
Report accidents: If involved in an accident, immediately report it to the authorities and your insurance company. Gather evidence and contact witnesses if necessary.
By following these safety guidelines, digital boda drivers can contribute to a safer and more responsible industry. Remember, safety is not just about avoiding accidents but also about protecting yourself and others on the road.
Technological advancements are continuously transforming the digital boda industry, improving efficiency, safety, and customer experience. Here are some key trends to watch:
Electric bikes: The adoption of electric bikes is gaining momentum, offering a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional motorcycles. Electric bikes have lower operating costs, produce zero emissions, and are eligible for government incentives in some countries.
GPS tracking: Real-time GPS tracking systems can improve efficiency, safety, and accountability. Riders can track their drivers’ location and progress, while drivers can use GPS navigation to find the most efficient routes.
Mobile apps: Advanced mobile apps are providing features like in-app payments, ride history, and customer ratings. These apps streamline the booking process and offer riders more control over their rides.
Artificial intelligence: AI-powered algorithms can optimize routes, predict demand, and improve customer service. For example, AI can suggest the most efficient routes based on traffic conditions and rider preferences.
IoT devices: Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be used for vehicle tracking, maintenance alerts, and data analytics. IoT sensors can monitor vehicle health, detect potential issues, and improve fleet management.
These technological innovations are not only enhancing the user experience but also driving the growth and efficiency of the digital boda industry. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative solutions emerging in the years to come.
On this Mashujaa Day, as we gather to honor the bravery and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes, we at the Digital Boda Drivers and Deliveries Association would like to extend a heartfelt message of love, strength, and solidarity—especially to those who have tragically lost loved ones in accidents, particularly within the transport sector.
We understand that the pain of losing a family member or friend in the line of duty is immense, and words can never fully capture the depth of that sorrow. For many in the transport sector, every journey is a testament to courage—riders, drivers, and couriers who brave the roads every day to provide for their families, connect communities, and keep our economy moving. To those who have lost their lives, we offer this tribute: You are, and forever will be, our heroes.
Your loved ones were not just workers; they were warriors on the frontlines, helping to build Kenya one delivery, one passenger, one mile at a time. Their efforts, their dedication, and their dreams live on in every corner of this country. We will never forget them. Today, we honor their memory by renewing our commitment to safer roads, stronger bonds, and deeper care for one another.
To the families left behind, we want to say: you are not alone. In your grief, you have an entire nation standing with you. We see your strength, and we recognize the resilience it takes to carry on. As we celebrate Mashujaa Day, let it be a reminder that true heroism is also found in the quiet acts of endurance, in the hearts that keep beating despite the loss.
To all our brothers and sisters in the transport sector—riders, drivers, couriers, and everyone who plays a part in moving this great nation—today, we celebrate you. You are the backbone of our country, ensuring that life goes on, even in the face of adversity. You are the modern-day Mashujaa, showing us every day what it means to work with courage and commitment.
On this special day, let us honor the heroes we’ve lost by working together for a future where our roads are safer, our journeys more secure, and our hope remains unshaken. May their spirits guide us towards a Kenya where every journey ends safely.
From all of us at the Digital Boda Drivers and Deliveries Association, we wish you a Happy Mashujaa Day. Let us continue to celebrate the heroes of our past, present, and future.
